Researchers at Purdue University have developed a device that can perform RNA amplification and testing from a sample loaded onto paper.

Proofing that the material has sufficiently stable qualities, they found a way to reduce the number of steps needed to separate pathogens from the sample through an electronic circuit board that heats wax valves from beneath intricate channels of the paper’s surface.

The device has been designed to specifically address challenges with faster disease detection in areas where there are no labs available or difficult to reach.
